I just love a surprise party and tonight’s was no exception, when Mulberry on Swan became the venue for a surprise wedding between Denise and Chris.

Chris and Denise met at a caravan park in 1984. Denise wasn’t sure about the cricket and football-playing redhead who had just moved over from New South Wales. However, after their respective relationships broke off, they decided to see where their relationship would take them.

After thirty years of happiness, Denise still doesn’t like cricket or football, however the couple make a point of never going to bed angry and always saying, “I Love You”. They have too many tales to tell and too many special moments to recall just one or two. However, one of their most special achievements is obviously their son, Christopher. He is their life.

During our planning meetings, Chris and Denise mentioned that they have tried to marry a few times, and each time something happened to change their plans. So this time, they decided to invite their friends for a birthday party and surprised them by getting married and finally saying “I do”, making their relationship legal. This was a monumental moment in their lives.

It was such a pleasure meeting this extroverted couple whose joy in life was so obvious. I wish them both all the love they deserve in their married life together.
Note: It is important to note that there is a requirement by law that both parties to a marriage must be aware of the impending service, so there is no such thing as a “surprise wedding” in Western Australia as far as the marrying couple is concerned. They are required to complete the Nomination of Intention to Marry one full month before the marriage date. So although the guests may be surprised, the marrying couple themselves must be fully consenting.
